Coffee and Wanderlust in Catalonia

Since my first trip to Barcelona back in 2010, I've been longing to go back. I fell in love with the city and all it has to offer the weekend of my 18th Birthday. The culture, the cocktails, the food, the shopping and the weather. It has it all, by the bucket load. This year, finally, we committed to booking a trip back out there, not just to Barcelona, but also with the intent to spend a week exploring the region of Catalonia. As my boyfriends Mum now lives out there we had absolutely no excuse not to prioritise exploring this beautiful area of Spain. (I'll be posting articles on details of the trip soon.)  We wanted 10 days of utter rehabilitation, from work, studies, training, and the general mundane habits that grind us down. I conjured up an idyllic recipe for the week of of exploring, eating, hiking and the obligatory days by the pool with a book.

Perfect.

The reality, unfortunately, was a bout of freak weather at the start of our trip meaning some pretty cool temperatures and crazy rain/hail storms hit us. *Cue some angry emotions and thumb twiddling.* After a few hours of sulking and a pep talk from an increasingly annoyed boyfriend I found some perspective and put my positive head back on ready to embrace a new plan - find the best coffee in the area and get spendy in the local boutiques; albeit with an umbrella in my bag.

Off we went to mooch around the streets of the beautiful local village of Pobla de Lillet - we were staying at my mother-in-laws, not far from nearby town Tremp, which was barely a 10 minute drive away. By 11am we got a break in the clouds and an  opportunity to shoot some photos and by coffee O' clock, I was just about cracking a smile.

In hindsight, it gave us a great excuse to have a leisurely few hours and enjoy the simplicities of just people watching, admiring amazing views, seeking out the best cafes and spending some quality time together. Ambling through the alleyways, enjoying those moments I reminded myself to seek out silver linings, let go of things I can't change and accept with sunshine, comes showers. A situation that put me out my comfort zone, de-railed my perfect plans and frankly forced a re-set on my control freak button.

Unexpectedly, that grey morning actually turned out to be a highlight.

If you are planning a trip to Catalonia and the area surrounding Tremp, I'd love to hear where you go and what you find.
